Facts About the Umbrella Insurance Policy

How Does an Umbrella Insurance Policy Work?

An Umbrella policy comes into play if you are found liable and need to pay damages, or if you are sued and need to pay for your legal defense – even if the result is that you are not found to be responsible. An umbrella policy only pays once your basic liability limits have been exhausted or the claim is excluded from the basic liability coverage from your other policies (Auto and Home).

How much will it cover?

Personal Umbrella Policies (PUPs) are typically available in increments of $1 million, all the way up to $5 million. When considering the right amount for your PUP, it’s important to think beyond just your banking or investment assets. Your PUP should include enough protection for all your assets, including your home, valuables and earning capacity, too.

Who is Covered?

  • You and your spouse
  • Any person named on the Policy Declarations
  • Any relative or dependent living with you
  • Your legal representative, if you die

  • Personal Injury: False arrest, invasion of privacy, libel, slander, humiliation or defamation of another person’s character.
